Disregard - Taken Care Of 2004-02-02

Well, now I've gone and done it! I have just now pulled the rockers off the daily driver to examine the passenger side rocker arms et al. It's had the well documented 'tick tick tick' for over 30,00 kms, but had gotten to the point where the engine sounded as though it was fighting itself to run.

I've read Raceit's write up along with other related posts, and need some opinions on whether to tear right down or not.

While still in place, I could not find any discernable gaps like Raceit had, indicating a collapsed/weak lifter.

I have the rocker arms on the bench, and there is some slight wear where they meet the valve stems - some are actually pitted on the surface. However, the rod cups on all 6 are very scored and appear ground down.

Looking at the rod ends, the ones on the lifter side look gorgeous, but the rocker ends are equally scored and ground down, looking as though they have not been receiving oil for some time. You can see a little teat on the ends, matching the galling in the rocker cups.

I have new arms and rods in a bag waiting to go ($311.00 CDN) and install to attempt to cure it (or buy some more miles...). Is there anything I can do while it's opened up to either improve the apparent lack of oiling, or is this a case of the soft rocker material wearing as would be expected with our 4.0's?

I do not burn any oil, and it runs solid except for the valve clatter (275,000 kms). I'm on the fence as to being willing to gamble the $300 in new parts maybe to find it going again in a month or two. I do have to put it back together in the next hour or two, so I can get to work in the morning.

Any perspectives on this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in Advance!
