My trans is acting up. When cold, it holds 1st until around 4000 RPMs then it will shift quickly 2 3 then OD. I was told this is called stack shifting. While driving, it will go into OD at 35MPH and stay there even when I let off and get back on it. Once I mash the pedal far enough to shift down, it feels like it is going from OD to 2nd and feels like a hard shift. Once warm it only has the second part of the problem with 2 3 OD stack shifting. I've also noticed that sometimes the truck takes off realy good from a stop and otther time it feels sluggish. Could that be the torque converter? I know this thing is due since it has over 240K on it, but I need to nurse it for a couple more weeks. Any ideas? I am planning on taking it in to have it rebuilt and have talked with Cottman and AAMCO. Are they OK? Cottman offers free diagnosis and he even troubleshot a little over the phone.

Also forgot to mention that when I slow down from OD speeds to a stop, the trans feels like it is holding on while braking and will let go after a few seconds.

Sounds like you have 2 problems that are likely caused by the same thing.
First problem sounds like a sticky governor valve-- especialy if it get better once warmed up. The second issue is the converter clutch is staying on due to a stuck TCC solenoid.

Those two problems are probably because of metal contamination in the ATF fluid. Time for an overhaul.

Any thoughts on Cottman or AAMCO? I am going to Cottman today because they offer free diagnosis. I wanted to do it my self, but the thought of screwing something up bothers me. I was looking at this website below to get the first kit listed along with the carbon fiber bands, a new pump if needed, and a couple of hard parts I cant remember off the top off my head. Can anyone tell me if the prices on that website are fair?
