Just found this site about an hour ago and been going through it

Ive had my 91 xlt 2wd AUTO since feb of 05

when i got it the OD didnt work in it

well my step-dad told me that the fluid had to be checked and changed a lot

anywho, the fluid i would normally change every 3 weeks or so it would come up black(burnt) so recently for about 2 months now id have to shift from 2nd to Drive to get it to shift...and if the engine wasnt warm enough id have to shift it back to 2nd because it was act like its in neutral...so yesterday i was driving down my street and was doing the typical shifting from 2nd to d and back to 2nd cuz it wasnt warm enough yet...well i accidently went to far and shift it to OD and i heard a loud POP kinda like a firework was exploded under the car...after that i cant do anything all gears acts like its in neutral unless i rev the engine to where it only moves like a few inches or so i was looking under the car i dont know the name of this so you'll have to bar with me the long metal bar that spins....it doesnt spin anymore..so im wondering if the transmission is dead? the fluid i just replaced yesterday replacing it isnt a problem because my uncle owns a salvage yard with about 6 or 7 explorers in the lot just wanted to know about mine though

thanks

mine did that to but it never poped like that. my front pump went out because i starved it on a hill and in about two months i was without any gears.

The transmission is dead. Burnt fluid is a sure sign its on its last legs. I am surprised it went this far, even with changing fluid constantly. The long bar is the driveshaft. If it doesn't turn, you are going nowhere. Does you runcle happen to have a spare transmission with low miles you can swap in?

man this looks like a ***** to take out

the drive shaft has to be disconnected all they way in the rear cuz theres no bolts right at the tranny and thats the first of the problems

on an estimate is this easy to do..or hard?

Your 2 wheel drive....its a lot easier. No transfer case and no front driveshaft. Drop the rear of the driveshaft and it just slides out of the trans. You need to run a few searches as far as removal and raplacing the trans though. There are a ton of useful tips. Hard...not if you have a good mechanical ability and general tools and a floor jack. Just do a little research around here before you start.

so my uncle only had 4x4 explorers one 1 2wd but pulled the dipstick adn the fluid was black...so one of my buddys was telling me that a ranger and a bronco II and even a aerostar with rwd will fit so we are gonna go get a tranny out of a 91 ford ranger but now i took the battery otu a fe wdays ago and put it back in...and now my engine wont start....is this because i still have the pan off my old tranny(didnt take my tranny out yet) the starter isnt even clicking but it was clicking b4 i pulled the battery out.....i was thinking its a ground wire i might of pulled but i dont see anything wrong

Well, it will work better than the one you have. The Ranger transmission is slightly different than the one in the 4.0 Explorer. Prefered transmission would be a 93 or 94.

ok figured what was wrong with the engine not starting had a wired pulled from the transmission

ok i will look into that type of year..thanks
