91 engine making noises using water

my 91 has only 70000 on it and it uses alot of water and sometimes it will make a loudticking noise for days and then stop and run great. when it is making the noise it runs poorly too.

Sounds like your head gasket is leaking. How much coolant is it using? The loud ticking could be a lifter that isn't getting enough lubrication.
