greetings forum! cannot seem to locate the actual source of this, sometimes it seems to come from the engine/tranny junction, sometimes it's just kind of everywhere.

started thursday after my sister parked at a store, when she started it back up the CEL came on and it started having a half surge half rough idle trying to die behavior. halfway home it started the whine noise that to me sounds like bearings failing you can hear most prominently 3/4 into https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg8gUGmQmkc

someone has suggested distributor, other mentions have been timing assembly, main seals/bearings on crankshaft, camshaft bearings/camshaft itself. torque convertor.

i gotta be honest, i haven't dealt with this issue before and am running somewhat blind. any help pointing me in the right direction would be much appreciated.

salut~

Simple first! Check all the belt pulleys. It might not explain the CEL, but if you have a pulley that is just wobbling or sticking, it can cause the eninge to run poorly from the extra resistance on the belt. I've had that happen. There wasn't any smoke, oddly enough. It was sticking just enough to squeal and slow things down.

It very well could be the other, far scarier things. But try easy stuff first.

When my engine had a loud squeeling sound it was my fan belt. I sprayed some belt dressing onto it and it stopped. But always kept coming back so I just got a new belt and it fixed it. I would also check all vacuum lines that can cause the engine idle to be rough and quit. Even if it looks like its connected check it the hose could of split right where it connects.

pulled the serp belt, spun the various pulleys i could, power steering was odd and i don't know how to describe, tensioner wasn't rough or wobbly, the one under the alt was off but i don't know how to describe it. ac was fine but i don't know how to make the clutch kick in to test that half. alt was normal (better be, it's new.)

whine is still there, with the s-belt off it was smoother running so yeah, at least one pulley it seems. whine without belt on seems to be coming from the rough area of the rear top of the engine, almost seeming like it's from the air intake manifold.

thoughts?

11, and 141, which doesn't exist according to the list. might be a 14 though. wasn't a huge gap between the 4 and the last 1.

Hmm if it is in fact
41 then
"System was lean for 15 seconds or more (no HO2S switching) – Fuel control"

So it sounds like your O2 sensor is done for, and or you do in fact have a intake manifold leak or leaking vacuum line.

You can try taking off the intake tube and blocking the throttle body off with something i.e: Carboard or your hand. Then take a vacuum hose off that you know is good and blow smoke into the manifold. (Like a cigar, cigarette, E-Cig or some other form of smoke/vapor)
The smoke will then come out where it's leaking!
I got the idea from Scotty Kilmer on YouTube.

Good luck! Report back with any other findings!

Edit: Now that I looked at your video more, it does sound like a vacuum leak to me.

hah, so, irony. wiggled the brake booster check valve, and no result. looked closely at it, no sign of issue.

followed the hose towards the intake manifold, nothing immediately apparent, checked all the fittings on that end and they were all solid... but wait. whats this super thin hose with the end stuck up behind some other hoses so i can only see it from below? hmmm.. doesn't reach far. oh snap, theres a spare nozzle on the back of the thing screwed into the intake!

so yeah, hooked it back up and everything is back to normal, though i'll be replacing the pulleys when i can manage because they did feel a touch odd.

and maybe the power steering pump.

thanks, and cheers!

i may wind up with this explorer, and if so i plan on rebuilding it, so yeah i'll stick around ;)

maybe the power steering pump.
Just my 2 cents, I replaced the power steering pump due to stupidity on my part, broke off the nipple for the return line on the reservoir and decided to replace the whole thing since it was whining real loud and had tons of miles on it. Got a rebuild from Lares Corp on Rock Auto. Price was great and Lares seems like a real stand-up company with great support and lifetime warranty. The new one still whines a little but that's just how these pumps are. It's much quieter and firmer in the wheel too. Couldn't be happier with it.
