I love my Explorer and its a 4X4; my problem is; when I put the truck in drive it won’t get out of 1st gear; BUT when I start out in L2 it can ride up to 45mph, then I can put it in drive and then it will switch gears.. now, when I decelerate under 30mph and try to accelerate, it whines out but stay stuck in that first gear. I would have to repeat the above process in order to get up to the desired speed.... what is my problem and can a mechanic for dummies fix the problem please help

First things first, how the fluid level? How’s the fluid color?

I might be wrong, and I hope someone will correct me if I am, but check your vacuum line from the intake to the transmission for leaks. I know my explorer won't shift out of first if that vacuum line is leaking.

That's a vaccum diaphram or it could be the kickdown cable stuck on kickdown check the diaphram for constant vaccum and no tranny fluid in the line and the kickdown cable going to the trans also....these transmissions don't shift almost at all with a clogged filter/lines... Even after a filter/fluid change it may be hard to save.

I was a quart low and have added a quart. No change in the performance thus far.

Just unbolt the transmission pan, its super easy and change the filter and while your down there check the kickdown cable and vaccum diaphram... The filter is probably full/clogged
