just installed a automatic transmission in 91 explorer 4.0, shift indicator is showing park but transmission is in reverse, how do i adjust it? i tried the pin wheel on the colum yet no difference, the transmission shift lever doesnt go back into park almost like the cable is 1/4 in to short, everything is the same , on the transmission old and replacement, or could it be the shift linkage ???

Take off the steering column plastics and you'll find a black plastic wheel on the right upper side, in the dash. Spin it both ways and you'll be able to adjust the indicator.

However, I only recommend doing this after properly adjusting the actual shift linkage. The Haynes manual goes through it pretty good, something about putting the column shifter in D, putting a weight on the end and going underneath the vehicle, removing the shift linkage, manually putting the transmission in D (3rd position) then adjusting the linkage to match.

how do i adjust the shifter linkage on the side of transmission???to make it go into park all the way,,,

Is the shifter loose??ive noticed that if loose there is two star screws holding the shift together under the dash near the steering shaft, they come loose and shifter doesnt lock into right place..stick you head under dash and wiggle the shifter, you should see the bolts..then adjust with black wheel under knee panels
