91 noisy in rearend when 4x4 engaged

just got snow went out cleared driveway got in to move the vehicle didnot want to go into 4x4 when it did finally go there is a noise coming from what sounds like the rearend goes away when 4x4 is disengaged. any ideas anyone?:scratch:

If it's coming out of the rear diff it should be making the noise all of the time, not just when engaged. Otherwise it could be the transfer case (unless your certain it's coming from the rear diff). Or some people call the front the a "front rear" which makes NO sense whatsoever, so make sure that's not what you meant.

My first guess would be you have a blown auto hub on the front, but without more info I can't really tell you anything.

Have put manual hubs on and rebuilt the front knuckles and spindles about 2 months ago. the sound has gone away and 4x4 is locking in and out no problem now
