'91 x 4x4 not working

ok i can mash the bottons on the dash and all i hear is a click from the mod in the back.no lights on the selector panel at all.i unplugged the module in the storage compartment on the ds and turned the key on and mashed the button and the light blinked 4 times.what does that mean? btw it is a '91 explorer 4x4 eddie baurer .

Unplugging a module won't make it work. Was the transmission in neutral? Did it work before? The electric shift motor on the transfer case may be bad. Do a search, this problem probably has been answered before.

unplugging it is how you check it.after its unplugged mash the little white botton and it should flash.tomorrow i am rebuilding the shift motor just like i did in my '92.i was hoping somebody would have gave me something i missed.
