Can anyone tell me how to remove the cover to access the sub woofer? The sub woofer blew recently, and the rattling is getting annoying. I tried to get to it this morning, I thought the cover would just pop off. Part of it did, I know I broke a couple of the plastic pieces that hold it in place. By the looks of it I have to remove the entire panel, is this the case? I just want to disconnect it for now, it is not in the budget to replace it at the moment.

Thanks in advance!

Chad

Well you have 2 choices. You can continue to break the little tabs, and just take it off like you started to, or you can remove the entire back panel and unclip the tabs from behind. There is no correct way to take the cover off from the front. If you just break all the tabs, you can just screw or glue the cover back on...

Thanks for the advice. How much of a pain is it to remove the entire panel?

chadennenga,
Did you ever fix your sub woofer ? I have the exact same problem and have already broken most of the tabs on the sub woofer panel cover. Decided to stop until I could figure out how to do it correctly. Looking at it, I question if just removing this small panel will give me enough access to replace the sub woofer. What did you do ?

I actually have just left it rattle... I just ignore it. Some of the other posts have said that the small black cover is supposed to pop off. I have not tried it yet, but they said to use a flat screw driver.

With work, school and thow owning a home into the mix... I have not had much time to mess with it.

Anyway... I hope that works out. How many miles does your explorer have on it? Just curious.

Just take the grill out and unscrew the screws then take the speaker out. NEVER pry the sub panel open. It is permantly attached to the quarter panel.

Sorry... That is what I ment, remove the grill. I thought it was black on mine, but I realized yesterday that it is actually tan.

Where is the sub-located in the 92 and do all EB's have a sub in them??

The sub is located in the back (cargo area) on the passenger side. I am not sure if all EB's have the sub or not. I thought they did, but then again... I thought all EB's had leather interior too, and I was wrong about that!

I have been searching the site here but couldn't find a pic of the sub placement. Are you aware of any? or links to any?

Leather was optional on the first gen Explorers. What I can't believe is that mine isn't leather. It's included in the package but the first owner was stupid enough to get a NO CHARGE cloth option.

Nate, I'm gonna replace my sub too. I'm gonna get an 8" and do a little modification to the factory box in order to fit it in.

This company sells 6.5" subs. Here's the link:

The thing is that I have no idea how many ohms our factory driver drives so this weekend, I'm gonna use an ohm meter and check. I'll keep you guys posted.
