Transfer case most likely. Contacts may just need to be cleaned, especially if the system hasn't been used regularly. Sometimes the relay in the back goes bad to. You should hear a click when you put into 4x4. The singleton maintenance site has plenty of tips. There are lots of threads recently with the link....

dude let me tell ya, i just had the same problem today. Here is what you do.. When you push the 4x4 button you should hear a click from the back. if you hear it, you're cool.. now take a hammer and getunderneath your explorer, and beat on to the small motor on the back side of your transfercase. That is what i did just today, and it works perfect now.

That is good info. I've been having trouble with mine lately. It seems to be intermittent. I thought it was just ice in there since its so cold in Alaska. I'll have to try the hammer thing.

Blaine,
How much snow up there in Alaska?!

Thanks to all the other people who helped with a fix!

right now there is only about 4" of snow. It hasn't snowed much. Soon it will get so cold, that it will not snow. The air pretty much freezes. You know when it might snow, because it gets warmer out.

Did hammering on your transfer case adjustor motor work?
