95 Explorer. 4WD won't engage.

lights come on, you can hear the gears engage the tranny, but no action to the wheels someone mentioned a vacuum leak as a possible issue any other advice? We have the drive shaft out right now because it was making a clunking noise when you first accelerated. Otherwise the truck runs and drives fine. We would like to get the 4wd back up and working before the winter weather sets in. Any suggestions?
