'92 XLT Eddie Bauer
I just picked up a 92 Explorer XLT Eddie Bauer 4x4. It's a 4.0 liter automatic. The truck runs good. When you put it in to any gear it does not move. (reverse or forward gears) I got it this way.(free) The guy I got it from said it did make some whining noises before he quit driving it. He did not drive it until it stopped. It has been sitting for about 4 months. I was going to change the filter and fluid this weekend. How much fluid does it take? Is there any other thing to change or check on these trannies? I wanted to try the easy and cheap things first before I yanked the tranny. I figured I would pick up a rebuilt transmission and put it in myself. I want to get it on the road within a month if possible. I'm going to give it to my 19 year old daughter. Thanks for any help.

When you drop the pan and replace the filter, you are changing only part of the fluid, just so you know. The only way to change it all is to "flush" it until the new fluid being added replaces all the old fluid. The wisdom of doing a flush on a high mileage vehicle is a subject of some debate on here. You will need about 3-4 quarts to change it the way you suggest. Make sure you put the rubber seals on the new filter when you install it and that you use the proper spacer on the screw. Good luck.

There is a lot of good info on the A4LD on here. Do a search.

Thanks, I've been doing some searches on the tranny to get as much info as I can. I'm trying to see if it's worth rebuilding or not. It's got 185,000 miles on it. I got the truck from the original owner. He kept the truck serviced from the beginning. I've seen where people have worked on the modulators too. I'm sure it needs a rebuild since it has the high miles.

Try looking in the General Section for "My A4LD rebuild Diary"... you may decide to rebuild it yourself!

does anyone have a manual to put this thing back together

my tranny went out so i had a buddy take it apart to see what the hell was wrong with it, well we got so far and we couldnt get any further. Anyways i took it to the guy that rebuilt it last and he fixed it for 100 bucks and now i have all the parts at my house and i want to put it back together but i dont know how, I know im a bit over my head but i was woundering if anybody had a book that would scan and send to me how to put the thing back together, it would be a ton of help.

There are two manuals. One is the actual Ford 3 ring binder shop manual, often available on E-bay. The other is the more abbreviated ATSG manual, easily obtained from any transmission parts supplier for about $15. In the "Useful Threads forum on this board there is the practical equivalent of a "manual" covering (with pictures) a complete teardown and rebuild of this transmission.
