91 XL - 92 XLT
Well, after driving my 91 XL 4 door 5 speed for some time, I must say I like the Explorers. But, I want a nicer looking one...with less rust than my 91. I found one for sale, $500, clean, 128k, lifter tick, little rust (dog legs only), and an auto trans problem.

He said when he shifts into gear when cold (rev or drv) he has to rev it up to get it to go in to gear. Apparentl;y it gets better when warm. I was thinking of changing the filter and fluid to see if it helps any.

I'll rebuild the trans later, but if I could drive it for the summer without any rebuilding it would be nice. Most of the searching I've done on the A4LD talk of other problems, like noises, loss of 2nd/3rd/4th, delayed reverse, etc. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jason

His fluid is probably low. The tranny will hesitate starting up whern the fluid gets low.

Try the low/reverse servo first

It isn't just for reverse. Easy enought to do and when these leak it lowers line pressure. This lowers the presure on the forward clutch. Seals always leak some, that is how everything gets lubricated in the trans. With a pan drop and new MicroFelt filter, don't put a screen back in, there is probably a bunch of life still there.

Can you elaborate on the filter and screen thing? Is there a certian brand filter to get? And, whats with the screen thing? Also, should I do anything else while the pan is down?

The same filter for the 97 5R55E fits

Earlier filters are just a metal screen. When new fluid is introduced, it will loosen up some of the sludge trapped in the TC and other parts of the transmission. The metal screen won't trap these. The SPX MicroFelt filter is physically larger and has a folded over intenal design for even more surface area. You must use the new mounting bolt and spacer supplied. The auto stores sell these for about $23 but they can be purchased for $10 at www.bulkpart.com but they don't come with the pan gasket, 69 cents extra. Savings pays for the $7.50 shipping. I'd at least order 2 because it will get dirty in a year from stuff that loosens up. After changing that first one they stay cleaner longer. SPX's corporate website is www.bryco.com

Well, I got the truck, and replaced the fluid and filter. Things are much better now. But, it's leaking from two places...the OD servo cover and the front input seal.

What I'm planning on doing is pulling the transmission, replaceing the front seal, OD and INT servo piston and servo cover seals, and the low/rev piston and cover seals.

Is there anything else I should do while the trans is down? I'm going to rebuild it later this year...just can't afford it right now...

Just remember

If you unbolt the pump, you will need an alignment tool.

I'm not planning on unbolting the pump, just replacing the seal. I'm concerned about why the seal failed in the first place. Is it possible that the pump became un-aligned (or a bushing is bad) causing the seal to fail...or did the seal fail just because of age. It's got 128k miles.

If the tranny is virgin

Just replace the seal and polish the shaft on the TC. I think the ranger station had a little blurb that a worn bushing causes the seal to fail. Since you are going to take it out again, I would just put in the seal. Chances are it is just old. Not sure how obvious a worn bushing would be. I think they say to double stake the new seal.

Hey Opera House, can you tell us the part number for the SPX filter for an A4LD on the bulkparts site?
They list several filters, and I think it's #23921 for $10.35, but they don't list the brand!
Also, do I need both large and small O-rings? I've never done a filter change, having driven manual trannies all my life. (My wife's Ex is auto)
Thanks!

bump:)
