92 xlt 4x4 Problem

I am driving a 92 xlt 4x4, today i was in 4wd and about every 3 seconds a thump would happen, and it would keep going in and out of 4wd. it seems like a hub slipping on me, but i am wondering what else it might be so that I know what all to check before i just replace the hubs.
