I haved noticed the following problem the past two years when I have switched into 4x4 mode. I hear loud popping and grinding noises coming from the front end.
This happens a bit when moving straight ahead but becomes severe when turning. Sounds like the whole front end will break apart. Luckily, I rarely need 4x4.
My truck has 93k. Does anyone know what this might be before I take it into a shop later this year prior to winter? Normal drive mode is fine. Thanks.

What kind of surface are you driving on when you get these noises? If it's asphalt or a hardpack surface, yes, you will hear noise (very loud nasty noises) because you shouldn't be in 4x4 hi or lo. Some noise on loose/slippery surfaces are normal. Search for "4x4 noise" or "4x4 clunking" or "4x4 popping" and you will find lots of threads with all the explanations of why you hear what you hear.

Does it seem like the 4WD engages? If it seems like you are still in 2WD when in 4WD, your auto hubs are probably going out.

Nope. He doens't have auto hubs.
