Hey all.

I'll start at the beginning of my trans issues. While driving one day at 65MPH on a flat surface, the trans shifted OUT of OD and back in. It did this a coiuple of times and then I lost OD altogether. I drove like this for about 10 miles and got to an area where I could go slower, and I notied that it was sticking in gear until i reached about 20-25MPH, and then it did a quick double downshift.

I decided that I would get the truck in right away to have the fluid changed out. I drove it still acting up to a local quick lube place that I trust, and they used the exchange machine to remove the old fluid and replace it. It was dirty as hell, and obviously burnt too. We didnt get it back to running completely red again, but at least it was mostly translucent red and smelled a lot better. After the service, the truck didnt have ONE transmission shifting issue....... until today. (BTW, the flush service was done in January of this year)

Today i was driving to work (about 10 miles from home) and going uphill travelling at a steady speed when a slow car pulled out in front of me. I slowed to about 45 MPH off throttle and then punched it a bit to get going again...... and I saw the RPMs climb to about 4K. Uh Oh. I babied it for a bit and tried to make it slip again..... about 1 out of every 4 times I let off theh gas and then punched it, it would rev pretty high before catching. If I let off the gas right away and hit it again quick, it would engage correctly. I got to work and checked my fluid..... Its still a bit dark, but it doesnt smell burnt, and is up to the proper level. I also checked the Vac line to the modulator, and there is no evidence of trans fluid being drawn through it.

I did some searching here, and I only found One topic about an A4LD doing what mine is doing, and of course there was no fix or resolution posted. I see a whole bunch of topics about this happening with the newer explorers, but not with the A4Ld. The truck has 99K on it as of right now, I've owned it since 96K. It shifts into and out of gear fine at park, and it has never slipped from a stop or the 1-2 shift. Other than the "flare" I experianced today, the truck has shifted absolutely perfect since the trans flush. It also shifted perfect PRIOR to the flush, FWIW.

Does anybody have any suggestions?? Until i get my Thunderbird back on the road, this is my DD..... so It can't break on me!!
