'93 Eddie Bauer
Hi, I've been lurking and (somewhat) learning for about the past month, and really need some advice from the pro's here (I'm not truly mechanically inclined, but can change my own brakes :) ) - I bought a 1993 eddie bauer X (automatic) about 2 month's ago, and love it, but, bad thing's happen, and the head gasket blew, and took the engine with it... :(

I just bought a 1996 X automatic sport (that look's like it was rolled in an accident), but the engine is next to pristine (the prev. owner did take very good care of it, I now have all the records :) ), and the transmission is in better shape than the one in my '93.

My question is will the engine and transmission from the '96 fit in my '93 without major hassles (bolt positions, wiring, etc)?

Looking forward to any and all responses.

Good news and Bad news.

The Good news is that mechanically both the engine and trans should fit fine.

The Bad news is that the 96 trans is a 4R55E which is very similar to the A4LD except that it is electronically controlled and the controls are integrated into the PCM (engine control computer). So, to use the newer tranny, you will have to either a) transplant the newer engine controls (not a trivial task) or b) find an aftermarket control for the transmission (also not trivial and probably somewhat expensive).

Maybe others will add more info - it is probably doable, but will require some research and mechanical aptitude to make it work.

Dogfriend, thanks! :) After talking with some people locally who are much more knowledgeable that I am about this type of thing, I think that what I'll end up doing is having the '96's frame looked at to make sure it's still usable, and if it is, I'll end up just buying the fenders, door covers, 1/4panels, and whatnot for the exterior to fix it (like I said earlier, the engine is better than what I had, and the transmission is in better shape than the '93). If not, I'm thinking that maybe moving the engine/transmission/computer(s) to the '93 will end up being the answer.

Thanks!
