Hey all

Im looking for some answers here and im not sure if i can get them i hope i can get a few from you More smarter guys.

I have a Dana 70 Rear Dullie i would like to mount it under my 93 sprt I know its a 70 but still not sure which one. It was free so i thought i could use it for my Build.

On the Pumkin on the top Right was a code c34835 on the bottom it said 70and i swear i seen just a B somewhere on the bottom. I know it was out of a ford 350 or 450 Smaller Dump Truck. Its a 8 Lug Axle and a 10 bolt cover I could not find any more markings as of yet. Dont have the axle yet in my hands.

Well im still looking into the axle but How much of a pitta would it be to narrow it down to a single Again. I really thought i could do something with his axle being it was Free. I have searched over the net and i did get a few sites trying to figure out what axle it was. But then found out it could be at least 12 models LOL. Here are some pics please any info would be great thanks Sorry about the pics the best i could

Can't help you with an ID. But I will tell you that I have read that cutting down a dually is a royal PITA to the point of not being worth it. I don't know if that is true. If you have read several builds with guys doing that then disregard my comment. But I remember reading that somewhere. . .

yea either leave the stock axle under it or put the d70 under it but keep the length and leave it a dually, that would really turn heads:D:D:D

Cutting down a dually is not really any more difficult than cutting down an SRW of the same axle -- full floaters in general are very easy to cut down.

I dont have any experience with the D70 other than it shares the same cover as the D60. However, if its anything like the Chevy 14bolt, then the difference between the DRW and SRW might just be in the hubs.

But before you start cutting down axles, look at your frame rails and see if there is enough room stuff a narrow DRW w/o making the vehicle too wide. I was thinking of doing the same to my van (converting from SRW to DRW using a Chevy 14b) but since I have a "cut away" van, the chassis is too wide which makes narrowing almost impossible.

IMO, the Chevy 14bolt is a much better axle than the Dana 70 simply because its design makes it 10 times easier to work with the internals -- so I'd look into a 14bolt if you want a 1-ton axle. They are pretty cheap, usually like $200-$300 -- sometimes dipping down into the $100 range. And some of them (especially the military CUCVs) have Detroit lockers and 4.56s in stock form. Disc brake conversion is also very easy and kits are widely available.

from what i can see, it looks very similar to what is in my '78 F350 crewcab. mine is not duals but has the same spacer between the brake drum and wheel mount with 9/16" studs. those drums weigh at least 100 pounds each (12"x3" brake shoes, manual adjust). the axles are as big around as my wrist. it is a brute that you'll never wear out.
ya gotta consider the overall weight of a unit like that when hanging under your leaf springs.
is over-kill always a good idea????

have fun with it...............t

Hey all great info guys LOL well i wanted to put dana 44 and a ford 9 under my explore but then got to the point that after 37' tires i would start brakeing my front axle so there for i want to do the dana 60 and the dana 70 being rear. So i was doing some talking and my old boss told me he had this old axle that i might want to use. Well bam here it is free 1 ton axle only thing its a duilly kinda bites but hey u never know. I really dont know alot of info on dullies but i was going to keep it Full Size. But to match the front dana 60. weather i have to narrow it down or just take drum off. I was told by a aonther guy all i would have to do is just tale the drum off and then put my parts on to make it a rear disk But again im not sure just looking for soem more info on this. I was thinking though if its a dullie i think just the rims fit just on the drum. I was wondering if i was to remove the drum would it be a full size? Just wondering

and thank you all for your input

I think what you want to do at this point is start measuring -- get the wheel-mounting-surface (WMS-WMS) figure and compare it to your Explorer's stock WMS. That should give you a rough idea of how much wider this axle will be if you were just to slap on some regular 8-lug wheels (not dually wheels).

do you have enough motor to push a D60 or D70? and will the 5spd hold up? I cant see a D44 or the 8.8 having trouble with 35s.. why do you want 37s?

Hey

well for motor Power Im really not sure i understand bout that not haveing enough motor power.

I just figuerd and have read alot of people doing 44 fronts and 9 in rear and then they spend all this money into doing that. Till they hit 37 inch tires then they have to stop before they start breaking parts. Then they would have to start all over again and go with 1 ton axles. I understand the part where people say i should just go with 44's but again i really dont want to spend all that $$ when i was thinking i could do it once and and it done and no worrys.

Yeah i think im going to give up on this Dullie thing. Cause alot of people tell me that its not going to be that easy of a swap when i should 1st just start out small and go with a dana 44 1st then get more exp then go bigger if needed. I just thought i could use that axle being its a dana 70 but again i would like to put it under my explore but again i dont know if my motor would pull it and that is alot of weight for the leafs.

Engine size doesnt realy matter -- its the tire size that will matter. From the engine's perspective, the only difference is that the vehicle has gained a little bit of weight -- probably the same weight as one or two adults sitting in the vehicle.

Yeah thats tru too. Makes sense

It will depend on the gears you are running. If you run a set of 5:38's in a 9"and 44, the 4.0 will not have any problems(even with the extra weight). I have a HP44 and 9" waiting to be built for my Ranger, but like you, I'm afraid of breakage. I will hold out for the 60's and do it heavy-duty the first time(maybe I will put them under the Explorer)......

have faith in the TTB D35, it hasnt let me down yet!

i just dont see spending over a grand in new gears and more just for the 35 im running 33's and stock gears 3.27s went through 1 clutch all ready how many more do i need to go through.
