I bought this with 96,000 miles and it was never in 4 wheel until I had it. The truck has been well cared for and well maintained.
From the time I got it it was a little sluggish going into and out of 4 wheel and low range.
Two weeks ago I put new brakes and rotors on the front, now it will not engage. The light doesn't come on and I don't hear the electric motor try to kick in.
Should I Replace the motor or what should I do to trouble shoot this?

PS The Explorer now has 108,000 on it and I have owned it for 2 1/2 years. I don't do any heavy 4 wheeling with it. Just an occasional jeep trail to retrieve a deer or to get parked off the road.

Welcome to the site!

Do a search here, there is tons of info on this problem. Possible causes are the transfer case motor or the control module (located behind the trim panel in the cargo area, driver's side). There are other, less frequent causes (wiring, switches, etc.).

Hope this helps.

Mike

Well this is a frequent prob. Try hitting the shift motor on the transfer case with a rubber hammer. If not clean the shift motor before you replace it.

Most likely it is the shift motor. I dont think that i have ever heard of the module ever going out for anyone. Not that it couldn't happen

I have to agree with the shift motor.

That's what my problem was. Cleaning did not work. It seems to be a problem with X 4x4. Whether you use it or not that motor seems to go out a lot.

Thanks guys!
\ The motor was bad. I got a used one at the bone yard for 50.00 and it was in in 15 min. I'll keep and rebuild the old one for future use.
Again, Thanks!

You can rebuild them pretty easily. Do a search on the forum and yll pull up a great thread.

One other potential problem (Although obviously not in this case). If you shove grease in the auto hubs you can hydrolock them and lose four wheel drive.

It happened to me after getting my brakes done at a local tire shop last January, they had apparently packed the hubs with grease, as I discovered while driving up a snowy mountain road. When I took my steering, suspension and brakes class last spring, I pulled the hubs and found a cubic crap load of grease in them. I cleaned them out as well as I could, leaving just a thin film of grease, and the 4WD has been working great ever since.
