This is a problem that has always existed but lately seems to be getting worse. Whenever we bring it to a firm stop and by this I mean not a panic stop, but rather the type you might use if you are stopping quickly because a stop light has turned to yellow and you want to get stopped before going through a red, the rear brakes lockup. This is on dry pavement. However,
during a full blown panic stop, the ABS seems to work as desired.

Any ideas? This is a '93 XLT 4x4 5-spd.

check around here...i responded to one like this recently

it is supposed to come on for like 6 seconds after the car starts..... also...the rears locking up first, they lock up then release..then lock, then release.. this is how they were designed... listen to it it chirps...not just a solid squeal...[/B]

If you're refering to the above reply, it's not chirping. I'm very familiar with ABS and when I brake hard enough to engage ABS, it's working as designed. If it wasn't the above how about a hint. I found over 1200 threads with your ID in them.

yup you got the right one.....i dont know what it is....sorry...some people on this site dont know what abs is even...so i was just trying to provoke thought, sorry....

Pull the drums and check for an axle leak... sometimes if the gear lube contaminates the brake linings, it can cause it (I know oil should make them not grip, but I've seen it happen!). Also, it could be that something is out of adjustment back there too...

I have the same exact problem as we speak. I went to my mechanic to have some abs codes pulled. Not good, brakes ECU (electronic control unit) is shot and the HCU (hydraulic control unit) is shot as well.
