hi the codes came up in this order 72, 17 and 31. any ideas what i can look into? i replaced the o2 sensor. i disconnected the battery when replacing it. truck ran good for an hour on my route job after putting in the o2 sensors but the light came back on and went back to the way it was running and still comming up with the same codes.

72 insufficient manifold absolute pressure (MAP) change during dynamic response test

17 cfi fuel control system fault or rich/lean condition indicated

31 egr positioner sensor below minimum voltage

other question is does my 93 explorer have a map sensor i just had a used motor from a 94 ranger put in it. if so where would the map sensor be? thanks

1st question: Are these from the KOEO test or KOER test? If from the KOEO test, are they KOEO codes or CM codes? If you are uncertain how to tell the difference between KOEO and CM codes, review my "notes on pulling EEC-IV codes" in the EEC-IV forum.

Are you certain of those codes? A '93 should be outputting 3 digit codes, not two digit codes.

A '93 4.0 doesn't use a MAP sensor. A KOER 72 (my code list indicates a 72 would have to be a KOER code on these engines) would indicate that you simply neglected to perform the goose test at the appropriate cue during the KOER test.

My code list suggest that a 17 applies only to 1.9 and 2.5 L engines, so I would again suggest you double check the codes and make sure you are reading them correctly (Maybe they should be 172's and/or 173's).

was giving me 2 number codes.
Yes, there are some applications that output 2 digit codes. Your '93 shouldn't be one of them.

Your Explorer doesn't have a thermactor AIR system, so the CM 317 doesn't seem right.

I haven't used one of those code readers, but it seems like those you still have to count the light flashes. Are you certain you are counting them correctly? Maybe try pulling codes by counting the CEL flashes?? The CM codes should repeat themselves, just like the KOEO 111 repeated itself, so, in interpreting your list of codes, I'm trying to see where they might be repeating. maybe it should be a pair of 173's??

Mr Shorty is THE EXPERT when it comes to readig/intrepeting codes. Go with his advice, try pulling KOEO, CM, KOER codes using the CEL (or go buy a reader that has a readout instead of the flashy light.)
Also, what indications did you have besides getting a CEL? How was it running?
The more info, the easier the diagnosis

172
(R,M)
Oxygen sensor not switching - system is or was lean - Single, Right or Rear HO2S - Fuel control

173
(R,M)
Oxygen sensor not switching - system is or was rich - Single, Right or Rear HO2S - Fuel control

i replaced the o2 sensor.

In order to say for sure, you'd have to hook up a fuel pressure gauge like that guy did.

update its goin back to the shop on thursday where i had the motor put in im pretty sure its the fpr and i noticed my coolant has white chunks. we will go from there i will keep you updated and thanks for the responses.
