Been a long time since being on here but I am having a problem with my 93 starting. It has set up for a long time and not been started. I just put in a new battery and it will turn over but does not even act like it wants to start. Any suggestions on where to begin would be appreciated

Thanks

x2 also listen for the fuel pump running, and does the CEL come on when you try and start it? If not the computer may not have power. Check the relays for everything.

Thanks i will look at these. Any suggestions are a huge help!

It appears that the fuel pump is not coming on how do I go about checking this. Last time i started it she fired up pretty easily 3-4 mos ago. I am getting nervous I was going to take it hunting tomorrow.

check the fuel pump relay under the hood. if not that check the EEV relay. if both check out good start tracing wiring. you might wack the gas tank with a hammer too, as the pump could have seized up sitting

Well, a pretty good way my mechanic got my caviler in the garage after we towed it. Was haveing me kick the gas tank while he was tryn to start it. He said that usually if you kick it a few times and it starts then its time to take that gas tank dowen..... hopfully u dont have a lot in there......

Here is where it stands now. I have spark and I have replaced the relay. I can also get it started by spraying ether into the TB. My guess is the fuel pump seized. How can I check it before going through the tear out? Thanks for all of your help.

Jump the connection in the relay socket to trick the pump into running continuously. If it doesn't turn on, then the pump or one of the connections in the wiring harness are bad.

May sound dumb but do I just shove a wire in there or what. Could the connections have corroded maybe checking those will help? Where are the ones i need to check.

Thanks again for the help

My friend, it seems we have a lot in common.
Sadly for you that's not a good thing.
If your lucky enough all you need to do is hotwire the pump via the inertia switch (under the passenger kick panel mounted on the fire wall) pull the plug out of the bottom then stick a paper clip or something into the pin that connects with the pink wire *the wire also has a black stripe* hotwire that wire (the pink and black one) to any 12 volt source (I found it best to connect it to the cigarette lighter so it could be pulled out fast) when you have that done have a buddy sit in the cab while you bang the gas tank with a hammer. if all goes well your pump should start (if not you may have a bigger problem) also if it will start with a hotwire check the green wire that’s also on the inertia switch for voltage (connect the green wire to one lead of your meter and a ground to the other) after almost 2 months of frigging around with it I was forced to replace the whole pump assembly (it was shot!) but the X runs now and I just need some money for the rest of the brakes ;) hope this helps. But if you need more I would be happy to make you a tutorial with pictures

Update

I have the fuel pump running and still no start. The pump is kind of loud but running. How do I check the fuel pressure? Thanks for the help and have a Merry Christmas

If your fuel pump is running, and there are no leaks, I wouldn't worry too much about pressure. The question is 'are you getting fuel to the engine'. It could be that your fuel filter has clogged off. That is located under the car, along the fuel line on the drivers side. It's a PIA to get off, but well worth checking.

However, since the car did fire up and run three months ago with no problem, I'm betting a different culprit. That would be the Mass Air Sensor. Most of these post 90 vehicles have 'em and if they die, your engine will not start. I had it happen on my 90 Volvo. I drove the car into work to grab something, came back out no more than 10 minutes later, and the car wouldn't start. I couldn't figure it out and finally had it towed to a mechanic I knew and he figured out what it was.

BTW--I would highly suggest to anybody, to get a Haynes or Chilton manual to really get to know your Explorer. Write notes in the manual when you make repairs so that you can remember what you did the last time around. This problem might be a good time to start this....

A clogged fuel filter (expecially if it prevents the engine from starting) could easily be detected by a well conceived fuel pressure test (fuel pressure would be low or wouldn't stay at spec while cranking).

Best first test for an MAF (or other EEC-IV component) would be to pull codes.
