I have a problem with the drivers side drum locking up when its below freezing. The local Ford dealer said I could replace the drum, shoes, and brake cables but they can't gaurantee it will fix the problem. Can anyone out there help?

Any help would be appreciated.

I start by pulling the drum and making sure everything (shoes, adjuster, .etc) is seated properly. If that looks ok, then I'd consider replacing the wheel cylinder.

93' Ford XLT w/tire binding-up

I took it to a Ford dealer and they cleaned rear brakes and said it was probably just moisture that was freezing in the drum and shoes and should be fine. Once I drove it I could tell that the tire was trying to bind up again. The tempature was about 15 degrees at the time. So I went back in and told the service manager to drive the truck. That's when he told me they couldn't garantee they could fix it. He did tell me the drum was pitted in two places. The mechanic first said I needed new drum and shoes then once the drum was cleaned they told me should be fine. After I expressed my anger that the truck was still acting up they told me that even if they replace the drum and shoes I still may have that problem. Then they suggested maybe replacing the brake cables. They didn't say anything about wheel cylinder. Luckily I haven't had this problem in a week or so thanks to the warmer weather.

I am thinking of taking it to a brake shop, hopefully they will know more than our local Ford dealer.

Thanks for your help.

One other possibility is a rear axle seal. It could be leaking onto the braking assembly that could cause problems. If that is the case, the dealer should of seen it as soon as they pulled the drum. My quess is the wheel cylinder. Any decent brake shop should be able to nail it.

i have the same truck with the same problem replaced all of rear brakes components ecept cylinders and i had to take every thing back apart and change the cylinders they were locking up my rear brakes it was the wheel cylinders .
