I have a 1994 Explorer with 4L engine, Eddie Bauer version, with pushbutton activation of 4WD, with a second button for low gear. What I really need to determine is whether it is worth putting the money into repairing the 4WD unit or whether it's just money thrown away. Sometimes the light comes on; it hasn't the last few times I have tried using it. It does absolutely nothing when I push the button. Is this 4WD such a bad design that, even if I get it repaired, it won't last very long?

See the 2nd sticky in the transmission and transfer case forum. Most likely that is the culprit. The 4WD system is not a bad design at all, it just needs maintenance to keep it working properly. You are talking about a 15 year old vehicle here.

IMHO it's a bad design, ford wouldn't have offered the manual case and hubs if they thought electric t-cases and auto hubs were the bee's knees. The biggest problem is usually lack of use, even then they like to strand you when you need them most.
My X will be getting a manual 1350 the second I find the correct shift boots.
