Hi folks! Just registered and have already found a sackful of great info. Thanx for the IAC and MAF cleaning tips and 4X4 troubleshooting. Now, can anyone tell me how to identify between the Mazda and Mitsubishi 5 sp. tranny? The lubricants are specific to each, would like to verify that what's in mine is correct. Bought '94 Explorer in Feb., 4.0, 5 sp., auto hubs. Everything is fine on open road. Get into town/traffic, clutch fades. Higher the air temp., worse fading. Have bled slave twice, some help but still not right. Any idees?

Yours should have the Mazda M5OD....I dont think ford used a mitsubishi tranny in any Explorer.

Stock tranny in the 94 is a Mazda M5OD. There's never been a Mitsubishi tranny.

You can try using Synthetic ATF (Synthetic DexronIII/Mercon if you can get it, otherwise most newer semi-synthetics exceed the DexronIII/Mercon specs) to help some, but the slave cylinder in the manual tranny just goes out after awhile.

Bleeding enough so you wind up replacing all the brake fluid in the master/slave might help if the old fluid is dirty and worn out.

If synthetic ATF and all new brake fluid doesn't make any difference, you'll probably need to live with it as is or drop the tranny for a clutch job/slave replacement, assuming the master cyl is good.

1994 5 sp. problems

Thanks for the info. Bled slave again, used nearly 10 oz. brake fluid. This time I also filled the resevoir to the step without the baffle inserted. This may have been some of the problem from the start...improper fluid level. Virgin Ford owner. Lifelong bow-tie man. Also only have Haines manual....may as well have flushed 20 bucks down toilet. Anyhoo all's well so far. Find out fer sure next hot day. One last question: Is the transfer case shift actuator (shift motor) an integral part of the TC or just a bolt on? Basically, do I need to drain the TC before removing it? I'm searching hi n lo for a Chiltons, or better, no luck yet. Bear with me... got the go to fix her, just don't have the practical experience ...yet.

No need to drain the TC before removal, but it takes the same ATF, so a drain and refill while it's off the truck is worthwhile. A whole lot easier than trying to do it on the vehicle with everything in the way.

Appreciate the shift motor rebuild thread Tbars4. Hats off to you Brain! Excellent how 2 write up. I'll be tackling that chore shortly, let u know how it turns out. Also appreciate the pointers on the shift motor removal from all. Thanx for not letting me make a horses ass out of myself!

Shift motor removal is very simple and straight forward. If you do the motor rebuild, make sure to make match-marks so you can reposition everything exactly like it was before you disassembled. Take digital pics if you can, it really helps to refer back to the pics when you need to. The trickiest part is completely disconnecting the connector to the shift motor, that single wire that is dead-center in the plug needs a little more delicate touch. A dental or o-ring pick really helps to remove that center lock ring, then push down on the little tab with the point and slide the wire out, careful not to pull too hard, in case the tab didn't release properly. see this link for a pic, in the rebuild diary Just follow the shift motor rebuild thread and pay attention to the pictures. That was my first repair on my Ex, followed by the door hinge pins

You might want to investigate your local junk yards. We have one that lets you pull parts. Is super cheap. I don't know what it costs you to fix your tcase motor but if it's much might be worth just grabbing a whole tcase?

We've got the 4 back in 4X4! The shift motor rebuild is a very, very easy and money saving project. Proceeded as outlined in Brain's rebuild link, and walla....4 wheel drive. The pictures provided were a great help along with the text. Thank you very much. I 'd gone to my local Autozone and for 129.99+tax+35.00 core could have gotten a Cardone rebuild. I like this much better. For a couple hours of my time and $3.70 for a tube of red RTV I'm no longer broke. Wish I'd of known of this site sooner...would have taken the 20 bucks wasted on Haynes manual and given to an infinitely valuable asset. Going to anyway. If upgrading to Elite Explorer helps keep this website up it is well worth it. By the way, who do Haynes manuals cater to...Rolex Ridgerunners? Gotta go....I hear a muddy mess calling my name....

Haynes and Chilton manuals are a waste of time. I've never owned one that was remotely useful. Watch ebay for a deal on some factory manuals. I scored a 3 book set for $30. Steal of a deal.

By the way, the plastic cushion for the gear stop was shrapnel. Computer had definitely lost sight of the gear position. Used a piece of 1/4" ID lawnmower fuel line for the fixer.
