yeah and what I will be curious to see is if you admit you were wrong when you find out you were..and if you bothered to look any ebay auctions up you would have already seen that!...auctions 350945393307 230981690820...look em up,,,both 94s and both without egr...never too late to learn something.

I'm Wrong, it happens

They make a conversion intake to go all the way to carburetor for the 4.0
then you could eliminate fuel injection and the PCM all together. All you need then are temp and oil press senders. You'll have to get a distributor to put in place of the CPS for ignition. Don't know if they have one, but i'm guess'n an early ranger dist. would work.

To eliminate the need for the PCM for the trans PATC sells full manual conversion for those.

Have fun with it, and good luck with your build.

Post up some pics it's always good to see a new take on engine mods.

I might have to get me some of those roller rockers! $800 bucks though. Ouch!

We don't know your age and experience from the info provided,

We were all just trying to save you from pull'n the EGR sys. and gett'n in trouble.

We just encourage you to be absolutely sure it will remain street legal, if that is to be it's intended purpose.

Thanks!..and thats exactly what I intend to do..its a 2 door sport with the manual 1354 case and not a rust spot on it..my other explorers have alot of it due to ohio winters so this one is a summer vehicle only..I only wanted to know if it was "easy" to change it over to the FED engine..Ive heard both its hard and easy so it will remain as is for now as I dont want to get into sensor/computer issues.I just dont like all the extra parts that were put on the engine and cover it up.

I have a question. My 93 explorer was bought in Cali, has egr, cam position sensor and two O2 sensors. My question is on the EGR. I had a cam position sensor replaced (original was chirping)and the shop that did it mentioned they got a hard code for EGR. Well I checked the voltage on the DPFE sensor and it is right at 1.5 to 1.7 volts. When you add vacuum to the EGR valve port, the voltage goes up to 3-4 volts and the engine starts to run rough. According to an online procedure this means the EGR valve and DPFE sensor are ok. But I'm wondering if the DPFE sensor's voltage is too high and is right at the cusp of failure. The shop cleared the code. And it has not come back. NO CEL light. My mileage is pretty bad though, 14-16 mpg. Can you help me here ?

14-16 is not pretty bad!!! Lol

This ex avg mpg is 20-22. Two years ago I stopped using it as a commute vehicle and ran it maybe once every two - three weeks. Sometimes a month would go by before I took it any real distance. So, I'm getting it back into shape. The shop said my plugs/wires are good. I'm looking bat the EGR, O2 sensor, ...

I need to find out what the DPFE voltage is supposed to be. Like I said I measured 1.5 to 1.6.

Any help here ?

I assume you are talking about highway mileage. .and 20-22 is real good...cant help with the rest so free bump...

14 to 16 is most definitely bad for an explorer.I have 3 of them and they all fall within 22 to 24 mpg..I guess if your talking a heavier 4 door maybe they do burn a little more but I wouldnt think it would be that much..Mine are all 2 doors and they get at least 20 whether highway driven or not.

Yes, my vehicle used to get that range. So, I am tracking down the issues, starting with the EGR system. That's why I am trying to find out if somebody on this forum would know what the DPFE sensor voltage is supposed to be. Thanks for your input.

My remaining 1st gen (94 2-door 4WD auto with 3.27's and A/T 31's or 30's), has always gotten 12-13 mpg in town, 18-19 highway. Depending on season.

In my experience with these trucks anything over 20 is very good for 4WD 1st gen. 22-24 is in aldive territory.

On the EGR thing I seem to recall that it was added halfway through the 93 model year on non-Cali trucks. There are some old threads around here that discuss the 1st gen EGR timeline in detail, if someone REALLY wants to beat that dead horse, and beat it we did about 10 years ago here.
