Greetings All,

I have been reading through the threads, and I see a lot of similar issues...but I haven't seen this exact progression yet.... I hope I am not duplicating a question.

I have a high mileage 94 explorer 4x4. Not long ago it started losing reverse. It would not reverse at all if it was uphill, if it was just a slight incline it would start to back up, but it squealed, or screeched kinda....did not sound good at all.

Then a couple days ago it started hesitating going into D(with OD), and it would only engage if I shifted out and back in, or reved slightly...

Today, I was on freeway at 70 mph, engine reved, lost power completely...no D, 1, 2, etc.

When I start the car, I think there is a noise that was not there before...even in P or N it sounds kinda like a low fast bumping noise.

I am thinking something went in the bell housing/TC area maybe?

Anyways,

If any of that makes any sense to anyone... i would appreciate any advice...I can generally troubleshoot/repair issues with some instruction, and have done quite a bit of work on my own cars...but I don't know much about trannies.

Thanks All!

Im assuming first step is a pressure check?

I guess I need to check the pressure so I can try and figure out whether or not it's the pump or something in the bellhousing, in which case I would have to drop the trans....or something else which might only mean removing vb?

Thanks in advance to anyone who might have any input on how to troubleshoot this issue , so I know what I need to do to get this veh back on road.

I normally drive it approx 70 mi each way 4 times a week minimum... so it's crucial that I figure this out.

Thanks again!

Dont know a lot about transmissions but it sounds like you are on the right path.

Thanks for the reply... I am still trying to locate a trans pressure gauge... Called Autozone and Advance...they don't sell/loan them.... I know I saw on Glacier's guide to pressure check that he got his on ebay...gonna check with a friend who may have one....

One question, if anyone knows.... I am assuming from what I have looked at so far that if it is the pump, the whole trans must be removed from the vehicle to access it, since it is at front of trans/rear of converter case.... Is this correct?

Thanks for any help!

Have Pressure Gauge...Important Question..Please help!

Going to do a pressure check next...but have to get another body...gauge wont be visible from pass compartment...so I need someone to shift tranny, while I record pressure....
---------------------------------------------------------EDITED---------------------------
I didn't need a second person was able to get guage up in window...for more info on using pressure guage check out Glacier's excellent sticky...it's photos helped me locate port....

I have an Important question if anyone can help me please....

If the pump or something went out, leaving me with no main pressure, shouldn't it throw a code?

I checked the DTCs and got 111 only.

Thanks for any help!

0 pressure all ranges/rpm,inside bell housing clean dry, inside pan ok also, pull it?

To Recap: I was driving on freeway at 70 mph lost all gears.... no loud noises etc. Now when I start veh turns over and starts fine, idles with a slight "bumping sound", but i have no gears at all, not even the feeling of engagement. (Which i guess makes sense with 0 pressure)

Ok, finished finals, caught a couple warm days and hooked up pressure guage. Read 0 no matter what I did, all gears, low and high rpm etc.

Removed starter and looked in bellhousing, looks good no obvious debri dry, no visble play in flexpate, turned with screwdriver some , turns ok.

Dropped pan and filter, little shimmery, (this veh has almost 200k), and fluid was kinda dark... didnt smell burnt tho.

I guess the modualtor failing, or the filter being completely clogged would not be very likely to cause this complete loss of pressure... so I am going to drop the trans...unless anyone has any other possible external or pan accessible possibilities?

Thanks for any help or advice!

Finally got trans out of veh.... anyone have any ideas?

Ok...Flexplate, spacer, inside housing all look basically ok...Torque Converter, Inside of torque converter....no damage anywhere so far that I can see... unless it's internal to torque converter...(pump failure?)... otherwise it must be internal to transmission? I guess unless there is a way to test torque conv I guess next step is disassembly of trans?

To Recap....Ok...driving along freeway speed, lost all gears...no major sounds at all...slight bumping sound when engine idled afterwards...checked pressure at test port ..0 pressure in all gears...if anyone has any ideas please let me know....;-)

I have photos of what I have done so far... not sure how, or if I can attach them to this thread?

Thanks for any help!

Ok, Here's my thoughts on why I have no gears in A4LD

Greetings All,

OK, based on everything I have read so far this is what I am thinking:

That there are a limited number of parts that can cause a 0 pressure condition in all gears without significant symptoms prior to failure, or major mechanical noise during or after failure.

1. I would think the tc would have given symptoms of some type, or made more noise when it failed.. or after I removed it. Regardless, it seems that replacing the TC at this point is a good move regardless, so I will be purchasing one with braised fins I guess, any reccommendations would be more than welcome.. I want a decent TC, I don't need any high performance, just need it to work correctly.

2. I think that the bumping noise I hear at idle is something turning inside something it normally turns at idle to create pressure. It seems like the most likely suspect is a gear inside my front pump.

3. Since I have the tranny out now, and I will most likely need this vehicle for another 2 yrs minimum, as daily transportaion with 4 wheel drive availabe when needed, even If I find a busted gear in the pump...I may as well do a rebuild on the tranny now, since I have it out, and maybe go ahead and replace the rear main seal on the engine also...since I need to check the pilot bushing anyways..and it's almost exposed?

4. I am not sure whether I really need additional kits installed besides the master rebuild kit? I just need a dependable tranny, and I am rebuilding it myself because I can't afford to pay someone... I have more time than money. I may regret that decision... I know of a guy who will rebuild it for me for 250$...but from what I have read this is one of the easier auto trans to rebuild...if there is such a thing, and 250$ is 250$..... anyways I am just trying to work this out in my head...if anyone has any comments please feel free to fire away... I appreciate any input anyone might have.

I was looking this kit:
http://www.transmissioncenter.org/a4ld.htm

The combo kit listed on top seems like a decent deal if I need the extras?
Not sure if it's worth it to spend 100$+ extra above a master kit, based on a $ vs. functioning difference?

I have a copy of the ATRA manual for the A4LD... I have also heard the Ford trans service manual recommended... I am not sure whether a first timer like me needs that manual also?
---------------------------------------------------------------------EDITED-------------
Ok I started searching another guys posts about his A4LD probs and questions that was posted recently...anmd the answer to this seems to be that I need ATRA book and update book... I will start looking for update book. If anyone has any other answer to this question please let me know , otherwise I will consider this answered.... I apologise for not searching new posts first. I just hadn't realized there would be new questions so similar that were getting answers I needed, my bad.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was really hoping that this forum would be interactive... there are a lot of really informative posts here, but obviously..sometimes when you read something, you have questions... maybe stupid questions, but if you don't know much...any help is always appreciated. Still I am really thankful for all the information that is being maintained here, and made available to peeps like myself who are just looking for a light at the end of the tunnel.

Maybe I am going about the posting, question asking process, or something else involved incorrectly? If so if anyone would pm or something and tell me what I am doing wrong I would appreciate it greatly.

I understand that everyone has their own problems, and lives and that they may simply not have enough time to contribute more than they already do/or have done.

I am just going to continue this thread with myself in the hopes that if someone in my situation, or a similar one comes along...maybe they will find something of value to them. I will be taking pics as I go along, in case I need a reference... anyone who wants them is welcome to them.My email is raggamufinn@yahoo.com , but obviously I will have more info as I go along.

It looks like members cannot post pics
------------------ Edited #2------------------------------------
I guess I should say that it looks like I cannot post pics, I found instructions that explain how to attach pics and start albums...but I do not have access if I click the link described in the FAQ, not sure if rules have changed or if I am just an idiot at this stuff? If the rules have changed I would suggest an update to FAQ...maybe something like you will be unable to access this feature if...or something along those lines?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

:, and besides there are already excellent tutorials on this site about rebuilding the A4LD, so I figure there's no sense re-inventing the wheel... especially since the authors of the existing tuts obviously know more than me..(which isn't saying much ;-).... Thank God for that!

Have a Great Day!

but I guess even a busted clock is right twice a day....

Small ring gear inside front pump was broken in 3 places....here's link to pics so far... will retake pics of ring gear and a couple others because lighting is really bad.....
