Ok, I took my 1994 Explorer Sport out mudding a bit.
Not anything too harsh, but I did hit lots of large puddles, well, 1-1.5ft deep, but consider them puddles.

Anyways, I got to a certain point, and the truck conked out. (luckily I was on dry ground)

I tried starting it, it would crank, hit a about 500rpm, waver a bit, then die a second later. It would keep doing that no matter how long it sat, let it sit for 20min or so once.

I had a date in 2 hours and was getting irritated so I tried something...not the brightest of ideas, but otherwise I would be stranded and miss my date (we couldn't have that).

When I cranked it, and it started, I tapped the gas peddle a few times and got it to rev to 1-2k rpm, then it would flux, and then die.

Then I had the not so great idea of tapping with the flux, and I got it to waver back and forth between 2-3k rpm for about 5min before it finally started idling fine again and keeping a steady rev.

It died and had to do the same thing a couple other times to get it out of the back trails an onto the main roads. But it would only conk out and not start after I hit water.

Which doesn't make since to me really. The problem sounds like a fuel problem, but we checked for water in the gas, and there was none. The person i was with thinks it is a fuel filter.

The truck runs fine now, I have not dared to take it off-road since.

Can anyone give me any bright ideas on this? Here are the stats on the truck:

Year: 1994
Tranny: Auto (yeah, I know...)
Engine: V6
Mods: None

First of all, I would just like to say, that it was a bad idea to take the truck out mudding the 2nd day I got it, and I realise that, but this problem has me a bit worried and I would liek to know what is wrong, if anything.

Thanks,

It's a long shot buit you could check the coolent temp sensor for any wires that might be loose or broke. It might be grounding out or something.
Mine did sort of the same thing, only a lot more problems. '91 XLT

My recommendation is just check all ur wires. My 91 went through some water... nothing too deep, but during our flooding last year we used my car, not my mom or dads, to go check out the area.. It got the wires wet and did the same sorta stuff... just a guess... im by no means smart about cars at all... lol

Thats what my X did when the mass airflow sensor went. Maybe you got som water or something up there. Also check the wires on it.

Yeah, I am thinking that I got some mud or
water somewhere wierd. Tonight when I get
off from work, going to go home, let the engine
cool, and then start checking things out.

Thanks for the tips guys :)

BTW, is there anywhere I can get diagrams of my
engine without going and buying a $30 book? I
am really really strapped for cash right now and
would much rather spend the money on food or
gas to get to work.

Thanks,

there are diagrams for sale on e-bay. but they usially go for bout the same price as the haynes manual. That thing is a bible for me and i have it in my truck any time i go out. its well worth the money

its odd, but i really flooded my truck last year (ya i know ya;ll heard this before) but as soon as i got it outa watter it started right up, so i doubt its anything obvious. maybe you got water in the MAF?
