94 ford ranger splash 4x4
Hi I have a 94 ranger 4x4, I've been having a problem with the shifting. The truck wont shift unless you take pressure off the pedal, and it will shift smooth. Hills are a no go unless over 35, bc it will redline and shift up and shift right back down depending on how hard I am pressing on the pedal. I had it in a transmission shop and he said my regulator was eating my transmission fluid so a new regulator, vacuum lines and 2 quarts of fluid, AND a $500 bill later...No difference. he mentioned something about a "governor" I believe, but he wanted another 500 to change that. I wasnt too pleased at this news. please help steer me in the right direction thank you.

he is probly right
the regulator is a normal problem for them mine ben bad

But, he replaced it and the lines and still the same problem. no change at all?

?? are you two talking about a modulator ??
.
the governor makes your tranny hard shifting from 1 to 2 if it is sticking...
.
your problem sounds like something sticking in the valve body.

J...so many transmissions, so little time, so few knowledgeable "mechanics"

yes i am, the modulator was replaced with no change, they told me it was most likely the governor bc my truck wont shift unless the pedal is released then it will shift. so i might be looking at something totally different?

Hello, it could be a number of things. It could be the cable that goes to your detent ( kickdown ) lever is adjusted to tight and it won't shift unroll you let up. It could also be you bands are out of adjustment or the servos that apply them are getting hard and not applying the bands. Not saying its not the governor, but if it were stuck it the transmission probably wouldn't shift at all. Could also be sealing rings inside the transmission or seal on the pistons in the drums. And then it could be the wonderful valve body of the A4LD, they are also bad about blowing valve body gaskets whit h is an easy fix! This may sound crazy and not recommended unless the transmission has high mileage but I have heardof putting a couple tablespoons of brake fluid in the transmission to soften the seals back up if they are getting hard ( last resort ). Hope this may help. Have a happy new year!

thats alot of good info, thank you
