hey everyone... I was hoping that i wouldnt be using this site for help with my tranny for awhile, but atlast here I am again. OK. my X has a auto tranny in it, and back in Jan. the seals went out on it and in the process messed up some stuff inside (not a ase certifed mechanic so i couldnt tell you the specfics. ) but i got another tranny with a 6 month warrnaty and had a ford dealership install it. welll all was well and the X was back up and running. I noticed it started to shift hard around 40 mph. I asked the dealership about it and they said as long as i wasnt getting whiplash from it i was fine. Well a little while ago i was travling to my fav. gold panning site and when i came back to start it up it started fine. well i noticed when i backed up it had a puddle of tranny fluid on the ground.. alot actually. from the old tranny i was use to a drip here and there... this was a puddle. I had some tran fluid in the back and checked fluids little low then put some in. drove it about 10 miles to my brothers house and the thing wouldnt go go in any gears... the fluid was spewing out from underneath. it looked like most of it came from the front seal somewhere. I have a warranty for the parts but not labor.. a mechanic i talked to said something about seal by the convertor. only a few bucks but is this a hard job to do myself or should i suck it up and pay someone??? if there are anymore details that anyone needs Ill provide them asap thanks everyone...

The front pump seal is very easy to replace...once you have the trans out.

Yea, easy once it is out! The real problem is this seal isn't supposed to leak because there should be no pressure on it. When it leaks it means that the internal bushings are damaged because if an improper pump alignment. Some rebuilders increase the size of the drainback hole to handle bushing leaks that might eventually occur. Bottom line is - bad rebuild. Put a new seal in and it will likely do it again. Of course it may be that the seal just fell out because it wasn't staked properly or a weld on the TC broke. Personally, I'd rather see a pan full of metal than this problem.

thanks guys makes me feel better :) well since its going to be a nice job to take it all out... would you recomend driving it about 15 miles to my house.. its at my brothers house but he doesnt have room to work on it there... it starts up great engine still sounds nice.. but when you put it in gear it takes a second and it goes in gear but sometimes it seems like it slips out... maybe cause of the low fluid? i put some in, and havent noticed it leak yet.. there is still fluid around the front bell housing but looks like from the previous leak... so basically asking if it is a good idea to drive it home to work on it??? Thanks

Many have reported dumping large quantities of fluid when the transmission was hot and under high load only to have the problem go away in normal driving. It's still there, just waiting for an inopertune moment.

Well after battling with the garage that sold me the rebuilt tranny with a 6 month warranty, they finally gave me a another one. Now i have to wait for a relative to come back in town from gold panning to get it installed. I did look around the other forums for people with some experince in auto repair trying to replace their tranny but didnt see to much if anyone has a link saved to a forum on here i would love it :) once i start to work on it Ill throw up some pics if anyone wants.
