The CEL came on and the mechanic said codes indicated I needed to replace the EGR value. I have been reading about the challenges removing the EGR tube connecting nut. The unit is rusty and I have been hitting it with penetrating oil for a few days. Not wishing to damage the EGR tube I have not applied too much pressure nor have I have taken a torch to it yet.

It seems the consensus is to use a crowfoot wrench given the limited space. Can someone confirm I need a 1-1/16 wrench on the 95 Limited? It looks smaller than this. I was going to use an adjustable but I got the message not to do that.

Reading the forum, I am now also wondering if I should be checking the DPFE units as well.

The 1-1/16 crowfoot or a boxed wrench cut in half is the way to go. The EGR is an expensive little part, and RARELY fails. It might get some hard carbon debris in it and can be cleaned out. Just blow/suck on it it to test the diaphragm. Chances are the DPFE is bad, and not the EGR. There is a new plastic style DPFE to replace that stock metal DPFE.

I went through this exact same thing on a 95.

What was the code? I'd get the dpfe tested before I went through removing the tube and the EGR valve.

Thanks for the advice. I returned the EGR and picked up a DPFE unit. Now I find there are two types - the oval and the D connector. Of course the local parts company had the oval connector version and the car has the D type. I'll go back to pick up the correct unit tomorrow.

I'll also go out and get the codes myself.

I have a new challenge - the person helping me took off the old unit and pulled off the two pipes (Hi and Ref) and let them go. He could not remember which one was where. Is there a quick way to work out which is hi and which is ref?

Installed new "D" connector DPFE which was more expensive than the EGR, but fixed the CEL issue. Thanks for the advice. This forum and the experts here are great.

Now I am going to start to search the forum because there is no CEL but the engine stalls when hot and approaching a stop.
