Did anyone ever try installing a '95-'97 4.0L OHV (non sohc) enigne in a a '91-'94 explorer. I have read that the '95 and later 4.0L had a heart shaped cylinder which was smaller than those of the '91-'94 cylinder heads. That had the same compression ratio because of different sizes of dished pistons. The newer style '95 and later heads had was of a "fast burn" design. They also said that if you install a '95 and later head and block into a earlier '94 and older engine electronics the engine will not run right. Did anyone ever do this swap with sucess. I have a '95 engine that I want to install into my '91 explorer which has 188,000 miles.
thanks

Working for a salvage yard part time I sell these swap alot. We do alot of 98 to early style 90-94's. There is nothing that will happen. You must use your old electronics, upper intake and on the 98 ups the fuel rail and injectors, and exhaust manifolds. In other words the long blocks will interchange. Now there really isn't any performance to gain from this swap since your not really doing anything different from stock but the main reason we do it is there are more newer 4.0's with lower miles then older 4.0's. Feel free to contact me with any questions like I've said I've done more of these swaps then I can remeber. later Doug904.

Thanks for the info. The reason I asked the question was because of the info I recieved from the following website
http://www.therangerstation.com/40rebuild.htm

check out the section under "rebuilding tips".

They quoted the Ford engineer as saying"it will burn down in a few thousand miles." All because of the difference in the combustion chamber design.

Doug904, thanks for the info, it makes me feel better about doing the swap. Did you ever encounter any longtivity problems?

Never in any of our trucks, the owner of the yard drives a Bronco 2 with a 4.0 swap using a 91 Explorer computer harness and a 99' 4.0. He drives it everyday for the past 2 years that I know of at least 90 miles a day, on the weekdays, since he lives 45 miles away from the yard. I beleive the last time I asked him about it he had a little over 30K on the new engine without any problems.

Also I do alot of 4.0 performance stuff on the side in which I've installed the 95up heads on early designed 4.0's to raise the compression ratio and they run great. THis helps a good bit with naturally aspirated engines, adn they also have a better intake design to boot. Later Doug904.

Doug904,
We decided to do the conversion on my friends explorer. We installed a '95 engine into his '91 explorer. The slightly used at 25,000 mile '95 4.0 replaced the old and abused 4.0L in the '91. The swap went smoothly and it took us only 5 hours to complete. It started on the first crank and runs great. Thanks for your help..

Glad I could help! thanks Doug904.
