95 Explorer is stuck in park.

Hi I have a 95 explorer four speed that is stuck in park. I can get the shifter out of park when the key is turned to on but the car is not running. But when the car is running it wont leave park. I checked the brake lights and when i apply the breaks the lights just flash for a second and then go away. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread to the stock 95-01 section. It sounds like the brake interlock inside of the steering column isn't disconnecting because the brake switch is bad.

Its an old thread, I know, but how can one fix the interlock? At least temporarily, until I can replace it. I have an 01 sport trac having a problem and I think it may be the interlock

The interlock is an electric actuator that engages with a small wheel to prevent the shifter from moving out of the park position unless the brake pedal is pressed.
