95 Explorer speedometer gear

I am planning on replacing my speedo gear in the transfer case. It spins freely on the shaft. Can anyone tell me how the gear goes on the shaft without spinning. From pictures I have seen I can't make out how that works.
Any tips on doing the fix would also be appreciate. Thanks

bouncy speedo

First off thanks for this forum and all you guys who try to help in here. My problem is with a 95 exploder sport 4x4 I got it cheap so I don't want to get into too much complaining about it .......yet. The speedo is very irractic now I've replaced the VSS and the gear with limited success it's still crazy and I think it's making the shifting patterns crazy too. Does anyone have an idea what might be wrong with this"crazy thing"
