I have a 95 Ford Explorer that has a random thumping sound coming from under the car. When it starts it is about every 5 to 7 seconds apart. any ideas??"
I know this is an old post an all but i have been having the same problem. A weird knocking noise has been happening to my car, Mostly in cold weather. From what i read ( i researched the engine instead of 1995 ford explorer thumping noise) i have found out that it can be from the cooling system. My advice is to buy a new thermostat and do a system flush and install the thermostat. It also can be a bad water pump so after that change the pump if the problem still occurs. Does your temp gauge fluctuate? If so then the cooling system can most definitely be the problem. I went to Autozone a year ago and they have me a 1994 ford explorer thermostat instead of a 95. I did not realize it was the wrong one until a week later or so when i read the box that was in the box. The outside box said 95, the box inside that box has a little ass sticker that said 1994. I was mad and i still never replaced it because now i know the problem but now outside has like 4 inches of snow. If you already resolved the problem may this post help people who hasnt.
There was a Ford TSB about a thumping noise related to the cooling system. Apparently the water pump had some problem that causes the coolant to burp at random intervals. A new water pump solves the problem.
