Hello I have a 95 4.0 EFI engine when I crank it, the engine has a loud tapping sound, and as the truck warms up, it will almost go almost completely go away, I don't know if it is the valves tapping or something else?
Is it SOHC? If so you may timing chain rattle, as the guides break and wear with age causing slop in the chain(s). If your mechanically inclined you can do this job yourself, but the engine has to be pulled, otherwise take it to a shop. The noise does disappear when the engine fills with oil. You will hear the noise most on cold starts. How many miles on the truck? If you don't wanna invest the money and wanna get another explorer go with 5.0 V8 the engine is bulletproof and does suffer the timing chain problem of its little brother.
