I am currently in the market for an Explorer, and I believe that i'm going to get a 4wd 93 that's local and pretty cheap. But I'm curious if the gauges from a 95+ explorer would work in the older versions. I have never delt with ford before, i've owned hondas and all of their parts are very swapable, and have done gauge swaps before in hondas. I'm just curious if the electronics for the gauges as well as other dashboard parts are similar. Also the newer versions of the explorers have an electronic compass mounted on the headliner, does anybody know if this is an independent unit or does it work of the ecu. Thanks so much for your time.

Not sure about the gauges, but I do know the overhead consoles are a separate unit. They are installed fairly often in Rangers and Explorers, regardless of the year. There are a couple threads around that explain what's involved.

I did an overhead console install, not hard at all. There are write-ups on this site. The clusters are not swappable, without fabrication, and I don't THINK the 95+ speedometers use the cable like first gens do. Welcome to the site! :)

The newer (95 up) use EEC V which is different than your old school EEC IV system. the instrument cluster wouldn't just swap in. It would be a huge project.

J/K about old school EEC IV.... Wish I had that in my truck.

Welcome to the site:D
Alot of the warning lights don't even exist in pre 95 models...

I've actually seen an entire 2nd gen dash swapped into either a first gen explorer or ranger but i can't remember off the top of my head. It is doable but it would take alot of fabbing and alot of wiring and computer work.
