i've got the BW4405 case . my problem is it was making a funny spinning sound when coasting ...well it stopped and now it is making a grinding noise . it is fine in park , and nuteral . reverse and all forward gears make the grinding sound . well i have it figured out to be in the t-case ... park does not hold (you can push in park) and you have no movement in any gear . sounds just like t-case is inbetween gears ... i was told that the eletric shift motor had gone bad ? i took it off and it would not change gears (i.e.) 2wd , 4auto , 4lo . i then moved the selector into h on the t-case with a pair of pliars . (( ** this stopped the grinding and the truck will run and drive .**)) well i bought a good used motor stuck it on and it worked till i tryed to shift into 4 auto ...went back to making the grinding sound . then i shifted back into 2wd ...nothing . but the grinding noise . it acts as if the motor won't let it move all the way into a gear ?

could i have the motor and selector out of sink with each other ? or do i have something else wrong .

this is my wifes car and need to get it fixed asap .

Your transfer case is probably bad. the 4405 is problematic but I would also check the transmission. You shouldn't be able to push the truck when its in park. That could be a bad parking paw.

The TOD clutch and/or shift fork in the T/F case are shot.

any idea on the cost of fixing this problem ? or would it be cheaper to buy a used t-case ?

It's a chunk of money, basically need new T/F case I believe. I think one or two people on the board may have tried rebuilding themselves. You can search and see what you find. Throwing a used in has been done by quite a few people, but you're rolling the dice as far as how long the used one will last......

It is a part in your transfer case called a "range slider". You need to replace that part and probably the fork and/or inserts that go along with it. If you don't get it fixed it will eventually wear enough to not engage. Mine just started it at 161,000 miles. I saw the part and the wear. Over time, the ends of the teeth wear down on the ends and the tcase gear slips on it. It will do it whether you are using 4wd or not.

Call Stephens Transmission in Chesnee, SC to get the parts. (864)461-4583. This ought to fix your problem. It is a LOT cheaper than replacing the entire tcase.

I just found this thread after doing a search; I have now answered this question in four separate threads. This is evidently becoming a common problem as the 4405's are getting up in mileage.

I've been searching, and knew someone had to have this problem, now I am also, GJarrett, did NOS/86 fix the trouble, and if so, was was the outcome?, I have a 98 and same trouble, everything is fine til I use 4lo, then trouble, have to turn off for a while, and seems to be ok after that, but when I purchased the X from a dealer, I got the extended warranty, which runs out in Feb., so should I rebuild, replace, and if replace, is there a better T-Case to go with, personally, I'd rather have a manual, so I know its in gear, all advice welcomed
