1995 ranger 4wd 4lt
i am new to the sight and would like any help possible. i have a ranger that i am having 4wd problems with, the 4wd would not work when i hit the selector switch so i manualy selected it after removing the shift motor, now i cant make any other selections manualy as it seems siezed up, also during my trip home the front end started grinding. after removing the tire i found that i could turn the wheel but had grind noise and play in the what i asume is the axel. i will try anything once but i would appreciatesome advice and or pictures in theese repairs. thanks in advance jn i will respond back to let you know how i make out.....

Put the truck in nutral and with out the p brake on. make sure you are on leval ground with the truck turned off and some wheel chauks. Try and move the transfercase to 2wd then roll back or forward and try again... It will hang up sometimes and you have to move the truck a little.

As for the front end we need pics... sounds like you have something dried out in the front end... hope its just a u-joint and not the front diff... you can check to see if there is any oil in there just remove the square headed fill plug and stick your finger in.. it it hits oil your good if not put some in.

I did get the 4wd to shift again, thanks. but i still have a terrible grind in pass front wheel mostly when going forward not back. i pulled the tire off and when i turn the remainder it seems to be partially siezed then releases if you move back and forth. sorry for the poor discription could this simply be the front bearing the axel shaft does no move ...

if you take the hub off and then turn the hub does it still bind/grind?

Sounds like your wheel bearings are shot. Also, if it does not do this with the hub removed try turning the axle shaft by hand. There are small needle bearings inside the spindle that the axle rides on that could be dried out and rusted.

Yes when i removed the hub and tried to turn wheel it still grinds . do i take off the entire piece to get at bearings. it looks like it , also do yo know of a thread with pictures showing this repair. thanks again for the reply. jay

do you have auto hubs? if so you have to remove the plastic snap hub then the wheel bearing retaining nut.. you have to remove the caliper also, then you can remove the rotor/hub assembly. Go to autozone and get some timken bearings a new seal and a tub of valvoline durablend wheel bearing greese and learn how to pack and set up your bearings. Get a haynes or chilton guide while you are there. they have a step by step process of replacing your wheel bearings.

hey thanks i like to work on some things myself like that. i will go tomorow to get some parts it was minus 38 cel last couple of days so truck has been jacked up in garage. i got the caliper almost off last bolt is giving me trouble.. they are manual hubs .. ps have you ever seen a thread with pictures pertaining to this repair, i am looking and have not found anything. thanks again jay

by chance do you know where i can find the 4wd module on this ranger 95 4lt i have searched the threads and internet and my truck with no luck. i looked behind both seats no luck.. thanks jay

its behind the driver side. under the plastic interior panel. just a little 5x7 or so black box with 2 or 3 wire conections on it.

thanks again i will look its ext cab i was behind seats and under them . i will take panels off this mornig. i got the shift motor working with direct power all fuses are good but still have no power to the harness were shift motor plugs in. ty jay.. appreciate the replies this is a great site for help

i think i found it i borrowed the keys and removed the radio looks like i need to remove a couple 10 bolts to get it out should there be a reset button to test . i have checked all fuses nothing seems wrong when i turn the 4wd sel nob i dont here any clicking like it used to do. i applied direct power the the shift motor and it seems to work fine both ways. i hope im getting close to this problem. i been driving my back up car and today we got 30 cm more snow. thanks again for the help its been -20 so tough to stay out long working on it.... jay

I hope you get it figured out. There is a reset button on the sift computer and I think there is a relay under the dash or under the hood also. I could be wrong about that, but it sounds as if you are on the right track.

post did not go through i pulled out the black box its the pick up electronic 4x4 but no reset button or lights on it .. anymore help would be appreciated.... jay
