Where are, and which ports does one jump, to read the check engine light on a 95 ranger xlt w/4.0?

Your '95 Ranger is OBD-II compliant. The diagnostic port is located directly below the steering column at the base of the dash. There is a small cover that pops out to reveal it.

I have been told that 96 and up was OBDII, though I thought that that port did look like it was on OBDII connector. Can I get the code readers at Autozone to work on this?

The '95 Ranger for some reason was one of the first Ford vehicles to be OBD-II compliant. Federal mandated all model year 1996 and up had to be. Ford used the '95 Ranger as a guinea pig for OBD-II.

Yes, the Auotzone reader should work to pull your codes.

Thanks, I'll give them a try again.

...Curious...Since you don't have your location under your name, where are you located?

...We've gotten a few new members from Tn. lately, welcome aboard...:D

...Having your location under your name will make it possible for other members in your area to help with such things as parts gathering and possibly helping you out locally if needed..;)

i dont know if yours is in the exact same position as mine but this is the location of the port as well as the shape of the connector so you know what obd-II looks like. this is on my 96 x. if this is the type you have almost all the readers at your local store should work.

Yes, that is what it looks like and AZ was able to read it. Code 0402, EGR problem. The guy at AZ says it is more likely the DPFE sensor. Any thoughts?
