i found an engine!! as efi is a bit more reliable im thinkin bout scoopin it up. its a 95 5.0 HO 5spd. what r the numbers for these engines? were all 94,95 stangs HO? my 91 explorer had a 5spd tranny, so how hard will it be 2 get the new 5spd workin right? i also have a wiring question. would it be easier to scoop up a mustang dash and interrior wiring and jus plug it in to the 5.0engine wiring and go?? or would it b easier to keep my Xdash and wiring and splice it n2 the mustang engine harness? if i got a stang dash and interior wiring, how much/long would it take 2 swap? if its 2 hard but the best way i guess i would send it 2 a shop and let them do it...how much would i b lookin at??range?thanx 4 all the help.

Ok.....where should I start.......? :)
-First make sure the engine has all the complete wiring/computer and accesories before you buy it. If it is incomplete, you will have to spend a fortune on parts? Did you buy a new tranny yet too? If not..... Your Existing Explorer 5spd WILL NOT bolt-up to the 5.0. The bellhousing is too small. You do not need a Mustang dash to make it work. Keep your existing explorer dash and instrument panels. The only thing that you might need from the mustang dash, is the tachometer gearing and dial. The only input your explorer dash needs from the 5.0 is the Oil Pressure, water temp, and tach..... this equals a total of three wires. There are lots and lots of posts concerning the V8 swap on this forum..... You might want to look at the previous pages to get an idea of all you have to do.

Time: took me 2.5 weeks. The conversion typically runs people over $5,000-10,000 by the time thier done. If your gonna have a shop do it, you will be lookiNG AT SOME MAJOR labor COSTS........due to the amount of custom fabbing involved. Remember, theres a lot more than jsut dropping it the engine combo in and bolting it up. Youll need a completely new exhaust system, Radiator, cooling options, Heater box mod, Engine mount placement, manual trans mods, wiring, etc, etc, etc $$$$$$

Good Luck,
Al

what's the best year of the 5.0L HO mustang engine to get to swap into a '94 explorer XLT 4WD? and about how much (in cost) do they run?

The 94 and 95 Mustang have a different tranny lenght then a 93 or less Mustang this might cause problems in the install of the Transmisson and drive lines.

"THE BEST YEAR" depends on if you have to deal with emission guidlines....... If you do, than 94+ is your only choice. If not, than go with an 93 Stang/tbird engine for simplicity. Or get a 96+ Explorer V8 engine......Ford designed these to specifically go into an explorer!

You have lots of options, you need to take a look at the parameters you have to work with.

Typical swaps cost anywhere from $5000-10,000 (if you do it yourself)

Good Luck
Al

A little more elaboration on Kris G's point-

It is the input shaft of the 94-95 T5 that is longer than the 93 and earlier T5 tranny, by about 5/8 " (I think that's the length difference)

You MUST use the compatable bellhousing and clutch set up for the 94 - 95. You can not mix a 94-95 T5 with a 93 or earlier bell housing. and visa-visa.

Keep it simple .... hahaha
If you go with a 94-95 T5 trans. Then use 94-95 model parts on everything from the engine (pilot bearing) back through the transmission.

The engine does NOT have to be a 94-95 to use the 94-95 trans.

All 5.0 HO engines after about 1988 used a 50 oz. ballance on the fly wheel. I think the T5 set up uses a 157 tooth fly wheel. This will dictate the starter you use.

As was mentioned earlier, if you got everything from the MAF back to the trans, and wires / computer from a single doner you should be OK.

Good luck

An interesting point about the transmission length that alot of people may not know is that the Mustangs recieved AODE's in '94 that were 5/8th inches longer. The torque converter had a clutch put in it that required the extra length and instead of having two different tranny mounts for the tranny they actually lengthened the input shaft. Seems alittle odd to retool a new tranny????? But thats why the tranny is T-5 is longer in 94-95.
