About 6 months ago my "O/D OFF" light started flashing and my 95 XLT started shifting kind of hard. Since I was on vacation with no code reader, I reset the computer and the car started acting normal with no problems till today. Today, while I was driving the same thing happened, but I drove it home and read out code 647--"Transmission-incorrect gear ration - third gear." I looked this up in my repair manual and it says "Improper gear selection depending on failure or mode and manual lever position. Shift errors may also be due to internal transmission concerns(stuck valves, damaged friction material). My manual also says: Note **May also be generated by some other non-electric transmission hardware system.
My explorer has 63,000 on it and I just changed the fluid/filter about a month ago and saw no worrisome signs. Should I just reset the computer and keep driving? Or does anybody have any suggestions for me?
Thanks advance for any helpful suggestions.
