When driving highway speeds, the steering feels like it is locking up on the Explorer. When you try to turn the steering wheel slightly to keep vehicle on a straight path in the road, it feels like ones knee is touching the wheel then it releases with just a little bit more turn of the wheel. Could this be the rack and pinion or should I look some where else? Steering fluid has been changed and nothing looks damaged or worn out under the front. Happens mostley during colder weather. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I had a similar problem...flush out the fluid and add new. A touch of seafoam tranny additive couldn't hurt. I didn't want to take it in for a flush so I drained it and refilled...problem solved. You could also add an inline filter to the low pressure side...any auto parts would have it.

But to be safe..look at all of the mechanical links (Tie rods,,etc)

Thanks, I will look into that inline filter.
