just pry them open and take out the guts. the sound is better but the perforance gain is not noticeable

The cats are there for a reason, and won't hurt a 4.0's peformance. And if you don't have them, you with throw a CEL. And be an illegal jerk who is polluting quite a bit more for no good reason.
