1996 trans leaking + noise

1996,V-6, Auto, 4x4, 84k on ticker, and tranny flush at 60k. The truck runs great, and shifts perfectly through all the gears, it starts up every time and gets me 19mpg on the highway.

When the car is started and it's in Park or N there is a loud constant metal tapping noise(not grinding, but chattering like loose nuts and bolts noise) coming from the engine/tranny hook up area. i give it some gas and the chattering goes away until the RPM's drop again. Not sure if the noise is from the engine or tranny. The only thing spinning while in park or N is the TC on the tranny, correct?

CURRENTLY the explorer IS parked.

Thank you much for your input .

Well if it's leaking fluid, that could be causing the tapping noise due to lack of lubrication... bad seal maybe??

i was wondering if this is a common seal to leak? what i mean is, if i drop the tranny can i easily see/replace this seal, i hope someone comes back with "yea i had the same problem and it was an easy fix"? has any had a perfectly shifting explorer, but yet also have a leak right by the bellhousing?

your leak is coming from the bellhousing area?

could be a bad front pump seal. that leaking causeing you to loose fluid could be causing the "chatter" you hear.

unfortunaly to replace that you have to drop tranny/remove TC. still not too difficult. i had my tranny out several times b4 i replaced it.

Started up the explorer and ran through the gears and then back to P......pulled tranny dipstick and there was no fluid on dipstick. shut off car promptly. as soon as it gets warm out, tranny is coming out of the car. :(

wow.. good luck. hope it not too serious. btw - how long you been noticing problems? no hard shifting?

and i got a tranny for ya if worse comes to worse.

well the chattering started out in early janurary; i thought i was the heat shield on the y-pipe b/c the lower 1/2 rusted off and the top was hanging there. put some clamps on and it stopped, oh good. well 2 weeks after that the chattering came back, but this it was the tranny and i didn't know it. it was -3* outside so i didnt look at it until weeks later. i drove it with this noise for 2 weeks and then it finally showed leakage on the parents driveway after a 100mile trip to cleveland.... i parked it Jan 31 2004 in cleveland in great working condition minus that leak...lol

but yea it started great, shifted perfect, i went very easy on the truck b/c i knew of these tranny woes(rarely took the RPM's over 3200), and then one day it decided to puke tranny fluid all over the ground. i would have to say it's been great the 1.5 years i have owned it, not one trouble on it. i put about 15k on the ticker without any car problems. i pray that it is only this pump seal people talk about!

can't wait until spring when i can dive in there with a wrench.
