96 explorer 4.0 manual transmission capacity?

I am changing the oil in my manual transmission and pulled out about 2.75 quarts. I have added my new synthetic fluid and put back 2.75 quarts but as I was putting my "fill plug" back in fluid was coming out? Is it overfull? How should I check a manual transmission. I thought you should be able to open top plug (fill plug) and stick your finger in there and if you can feel the fluid at the tip of your finger than its fine? Thanks!Nel

Putting the plug back in while it's trickling is perfectly fine. You'd have to put it on its side and pack it full of oil to overfill it.

Yeah, if you stick your finger in and can feel the oil, it's fine as long as you don't have really long fingers or something.
