My wife and I just picked up a 1996 XLT with the 4.0 in it and I'll be driving it now as it's too big for her to bring into the city where she works. As I'll be giving up my modified Jeep Wrangler to do this, I'd like to modify the Explorer to make it a bit "tougher".

I've already put a Borla cat-back on it and the K&N cone intake. I'd like to possibly put a header on it (probably wont get the Borla), and was wondering who made them - besides Borla. Is it a tough job getting them up from below?

Also, I'll be putting the 30" Wrangler AT/S tires on it when I sell the Jeep. Should these fit without a lift kit?

The second thing is that the tranny want to shift too soon, especially noticiable when you accellerate quickly. It seems like it shifts from 1st to 2nd, then immediatly into 3rd! Any thoughts?

Last question...we're getting a vibration at most speeds when we engage 4x4-HI. It stops when disengaged. Does this sound like a u-joint problem? Anything else it could be?

Thanks for any help you can offer, Rick

Hi Rick,
Took you awhile to post huh?
Well you can fit 31x10.5's with no problem at all. I had these on my Explorer when it was stock.
the vibration problem sounds like your front U-joints.
Can't help you on the headers, but most people say that it takes around 6 hours to install.
I can't help you on the tranny shofting either.
