Hello all. I have a 96 explorer that had a blown engine and a small engine fire when I got it. it would start and run no problem (except for the two dead cylinders) but the harness had some damage from the fire. so I went to the local salvage yard and got another harness from a 95 explorer same 4.0 engine. after installing the new harness it would not start. it acts like it is hydro-locking, it turns over a couple of times and then the engine stops hard. almost like the cylinders have water in them, so I removed the plugs and found the dead cylinders. so I swapped the engine out with a 4.0 out of a 95 ranger that ran great and it is doing the same thing. I unplugged the coil pack and it turns over fine, but when I plug it back in it does it again. it does start sometimes but missing badly. I put the computer from the ranger in and nothing diffrent. What am I missing here? Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Did you use the factory coil pack or the 95 ranger coil pack?

Could be a timing issue....

It is the coil pack that was on the ranger engine.

welcome

It is the coil pack that was on the ranger engine.

Compression tested it?

Kinda in the dark with your explanation. =(

Something keeps popping in my mind // Vapor lock // but it wouldn't make sense.

If you could get a Audio / Video Clip of it with a digi-cam it would be easier to diagnose....

I got it figured out, Thanks to all that posted.

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the modified 95-01 section. The 95 engine is configured for the EEC-IV system while the 96 is configured for the OBD-II system. The injector harness, and other wiring should be different.

it was the plug wires on the coil pack I had the order on the 456 side wrong. duh. I looked the firing order up online and the info I found was wrong. after closer inspection to the coil pack I found the correct order. which is 564 on the left side. thanks again for the help.

At first I didn't understand the title of this thread... How does one lose an Explorer? Wouldn't that mean it was stolen?

I get it now though...
