I have a 96 Explorer with the 4.0. It was running great and then started to give us some trouble. This problem is extremely sporatic. The vehicle will run great for days if not weeks. Then with out warning after it has been shut off it will refuse to start. It is running fine until being parked, no misses, power is fine, and no check engine light. here is the issue, the engine fires but then immediately dies. I have checked the fuel pressure, it meets specifications (approximately 40 PSI), bleed down test was also good. I replaced the filter, and then the pump relay and it was fine until today when the problem reared its ugly head agian. At this point I am shooting in the dark so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Theres a good tech section on this site with diag. info that you should check out.

Do you still have fuel pressure after it dies? Have you checked if you still have spark? Is the secuirty light flashing on the dash?

The fuel pressure stays withing specs, and yes there is still spark. No security system.

I also have found that letting the vehicle sit for about an hour cures the issue. After that length of time it seems to fire right up and run normally.
